THE STORY
BELTHAZAR – VOTED BEST STEAKHOUSE IN SOUTH AFRICA*
Wine, wine everywhere, tempting wine-lovers with the largest wine bar in the world. Welcome to Belthazar, a veritable theatre of fine food and wine on the cutting-edge of “shoppertainment”. A multi-purpose restaurant, grill, wine bar and gourmet home accessory shop, Belthazar brings a chic new concept in the culinary arts to Cape Town.

Dedicated to the wise man of the magi who was “lord of treasures”, a treasure trove of delights awaits foodies at Belthazar – along with an exclusive catalogue of kitchenware. (We might spell his name a little differently but we like to do things a little differently with a lot of style.)

Owners of award-winning Balducci, a landmark for contemporary dining at the Cape, travelled the world with their team to find an innovative formula which would showcase South African wine in a prime tourist location at the V&A Waterfront. Follow the romantic lamps to a terrace with dreamy views of Table Bay and the rich ambience of a wharf warehouse with thousands of bottles of wine, a glittering store of Riedel glassware, wine aprons, corkscrews, cookbooks and exclusive gourmet knives.

Belthazar is the realization of a lifelong passion for wine shared by the Belthazar team. Their vision was to create the largest “wine by the glass” wine bar in the world. Experienced sommeliers expertly serve up to 250 of the Cape’s finest wines by the glass and advise customers on a wine-list of up to 600 fine wines and sought-after rare vintages. All of our wines are stored in a designer Vinoteque with dual temperature and humidity controls for red and white wines, served table-ready in Riedel glasses that enhance the wine of your choice. Simply ask your friendly sommelier for assistance

WHAT WE’RE DOING TO BE A MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE RESTAURANT – THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING!

Balducci supports alien clearing by using alien wood types in our pizza ovens. As far as possible, we use in season vegetables and fruit and superb quality procured meat, poultry, fish and game, available in South Africa. We do not use frozen chicken (only fresh) and only use export quality grain-fed 28 day matured beef. We only use the very best extra virgin, award winning olive oil.

Thank you for understanding that this is why we’re sometimes unable to offer seasonal items like avocado, melon, strawberries and other popular fresh ingredients.

SMOKING POLICY: Balducci is a non-smoking restaurant and terrace, as prescribed by government legislation.

Our Story
I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, a city located 2300m above sea level, where the sun shines pleasantly and feeds you with warmth, even on chilly days. During my childhood I smelled the aromas and tastes of our traditional food as it was prepared with delicious spices, fresh ingredients and of course Teff - one of the world's oldest grains. Before we milled the Teff’s tiny grains, which provide us with so much of what we need for our daily diet, we would expose it to the sun. It was always a beautiful sight to behold. A part of daily life as a child that I remember vividly. I would admire it with wonder, while at the same time vigilantly keeping an eye out for opportunistic chickens, birds and cows.

Whenever I return home I am reminded of how virtually all the ingredients in Ethiopian cuisine are still widely prepared in the home. Without any effort at all, time spent back in a typical Ethiopian home translates into time where processed food is automatically removed from your diet. Here at Addis in Cape we strive to maintain that powerful tradition to the best of our abilities. Every ingredient and our spices, which come from Ethiopia are exposed to the nurturing warmth of the sun.

After traveling and living throughout Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa for some years, I decided to share the cuisine that I know best. In 1998 I opened Addis in Dar in Tanzania. Encouraged by its continuing success, yet drawn to South Africa by its people and its energy, I opened Addis in Cape in 2007. Ethiopian cuisine is famous for rich aromas and the generous use of herbs and spices. Some of you might think that the food we serve at Addis in Cape is not as spicy as you expected it, yet we are serving you the taste I grew up with and which I was taught to appreciate by my father and my family. The spices at Addis in Cape are imported from my hometown of Addis Ababa or to be more specific, from my mother! She is very strict in the way she applies the traditional method: she prepares the spices with care and a peaceful energy, while blessing them with love. Here in Cape Town we do everything as a team. Our Ethiopian chef and the South African sous-chefs work hand in hand to share the care and love needed to serve healthy tasty food to those who come to visit us.

When you are at Addis in Cape, don’t forget to try some Tej, the sweet homemade Ethiopian honey wine or home-brewed Ethiopian coffee. They both add to the experience. The energy and the care which is given at Addis in Cape for the preparation of food is immense, while at the same time we use both pleasure and consciousness to achieve the right quality. That in itself is our most important recipe and secret. Addis in Cape welcomes you and invites you to share our passion for a taste of the extraordinary.

Our cuisine
INJERA
Ethiopian cuisine is traditionally served on a large, thin, pancake-like sourdough base called Injera, which is usually made from a grain called Teff that is native to Ethiopia. Teff is now also being harvested in South Africa. However, where Teff is not available, other substitutes can be used such as buckwheat, sorghum etc. At Addis in Cape we use rice flower or Teff to prepare the Injera, which we bake on a flat clay stove called a Metad. Injera which is fat and gluten-free is used to scoop up the various sauces and stews called wot.
100% Teff Injera is available on request at an extra cost of R20 per piece.

WOT
General name for all stews and sauces.

ALICHA
Alicha is the mild alternative to all of our dishes. To prepare the food we use mild and flavourful turmeric that colours the food in beautiful golden yellow hues.

AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE
A selection of imported Ethiopian ingredients and items. See cabinet on the first floor for jewellery.

BERBERE 100g R 300
An important ingredient in Ethiopian cuisine, Berbere, which is prepared by milling dried chilies with several herbs and spices, such as garlic, onions, ginger, cloves and cardamom, is used in making all our spicy dishes.

KIBE 100g R 150
A clarified butter simmered in various spices such as fresh herbs, turmeric and cardamom. After the butter is flavoured with the spices, it is then strained, cooled and used in the preparation of all our Non-Vegetarian dishes. The spices in Kibe provide our dishes with a unique and beautiful aroma and intense flavour.

VEGANISM AND ETHIOPIAN CUISINE
Vegan dishes are very familiar to the Ethiopian Orthodox people who are accustomed to a minimum of 180 fasting days a year. When we fast in Ethiopia, we adopt a vegan diet and this dedication is thoroughly reflected in our delightful vegan options.

We do not use nuts in our food, but our baklava desert contains nuts

Our menu offers an equal amount of both non-vegetarian and vegan meals

We do not use any processed foods

Best known for our Fully Vegan menu option

Free Wifi available

Corkage fee R55 per bottle (Corkage only permitted for wine that is not listed on our menu)
Addis in Cape , Ethiopian Restaurant

Lucy's Story

Over forty years ago, in the Ethiopian town of Hadar, scientists discovered Lucy, a fossil that forever changed our understanding of human evolution.

The discovery of Lucy provided the missing link in our evolutionary spectrum, and proof that we all, in some way, originate from Africa.

The archaeological team who made the discovery celebrated that night by drinking lots of wine, dancing and playing the famous Beatles song 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' all night long.

Her Amharic name 'Dinkinesh' means 'you are marvelous'.
Here at Lucy, we hope to create a magical night for you too, and to share the food, warmth and rich culture of majestic Ethiopia with you.

The Basics

Injera

A spongy bread, resembling a crepe or pancake, injera is an accompaniment to most Ethiopian dishes. It is traditionally made from Teff flour, and at Lucy we make our own injera using a combination of rice and teff flour.

Kibe

Clarified butter made by cooking the butter with garlic, ginger, cardamom, coriander and a blend of Ethiopian spices and then strained through cheesecloth to become purified.

Berbere

This traditional Ethiopian spice is made of a combination of peppers, garlic, onion and other spices which are dried and ground into powder form. A full-bodied spice with a bit of heat, which is very versatile and compliments both meat and vegetable dishes.

Mitmita

Made with hotter peppers than berbere, mitmita contains similar spices but has much more heat than it's milder cousin
Common Ethiopian Dishes

Kitfo

Prime beef tartare, seasoned with clarified butter and mitmita, served raw, lightly sauteed or fully cooked, accompanied by cottage cheese and sauteed spinach
Doro Wot

Mildly spiced chicken stew, doro wot is simmered for hours in a combination of Ethiopian spices and served with whole, hard-boiled eggs
Tibs

Tender beef or lamb cubes sauteed and cooked with pepper and onion
Shiro Wot

A popular vegetarian stew, Shiro Wot is made from chickpea flour and simmered with garlic and onions in a berbere sauce

Food
This certainly counts as one of those restaurants off the beaten track and you would do well to factor in some extra time ahead of a flight to stop in for a meal. Everything is prepared fresh on the day; the organic produce is sourced within a 150km radius of the restaurant. A daily blackboard tells you how far your food has travelled.

Salads include the traditional Caesar salad with freshly grown lettuces and herbs from the hotel’s hydroponic walled gardens and a prawn and citrus salad that would vie for top honours in an award-winning restaurant. For mains be spoiled for choice from the three-cut beef burger served with fries and a side salad; the Delicio signature pizza popular with regulars with its generous combination of mozzarella, ham, salami, mushrooms, pecorino cheese, rocket and onions, and sirloin steak and chips accompanied with a lemon and caper salad, salsa verde dressing and crispy onions. There's also probably one of the best crispy battered hake I’ve had, dished up with hand-cut chips, pea puree, mint gel, grilled spring onion, tartare sauce and pea cress. The Pollo Supremo is simply sublime – a sous vide chicken supreme served with sautéed spinach, butternut puree, young carrots, coriander jus and savoury granola.

Vegetarians will be wowed with the risotto and ravioli, where you have the option of replacing the cream and cheese with vegetable stock. Dessert is kept simple and delicious, with sweet sensations such as panna cotta, gelato, crème brulee, and a brownie made with white chocolate flanked by a dark chocolate ganache on a bed of milk chocolate soil, mint ice-cream and caramel cream.

Drinks
There's a great selection of wines and craft beer on tap. Of special note is the red wine cellar that forms part of the bar and a natural cooling system that keeps it at a suitable 19 degrees. The bar is flanked by a living wall, entirely composed of plants.

Service
Professional with great attention to detail. Waitrons are very knowledgeable about the menu and maintain an air of decorum at all times, ensuring service is smooth and uninterrupted.

Ambience
Understated elegance with a twist of modern design showcases local artists and designers, bringing a touch of sophisticated dining that is unexpected in this “airport hotel”.

And…
They have daily lunch specials from Monday to Friday priced at a generous R75, including a beverage of your choice.

Surely one of the planet’s most spectacular locations, Hout Bay lies 20 minutes away from Cape Town’s historic centre. Anybody that explores the Cape Peninsula, or drives over Chapman’s Peak, will pass through Hout Bay. People come for the Seal Island boat ride, and many to enjoy seafood at the Harbour.

Now there is a whole new reason to visit Hout Bay – a brand new culinary experience launches on 1 October 2017 that explores the people and culture and creativity of Hout Bay, through her food.

There are two key areas of focus: Imizamo Yetu (isiXhosa for “our efforts”), the township on the hillside above the valley, and Hangberg, the fishing village on the other side of the valley. Imizamo Yetu, also known as IY, is a mainly Xhosa speaking area, with a rich Pan-African flavour. Many residents come from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Congo and other countries to our north.

Hangberg is a mainly Afrikaans speaking area of creole heritage, historically it’s economy was mainly fishing.

Here’s a possible itinerary:

The tour starts from the Coffeebeans Routes HQ in Cape Town central with a welcome drink.
Your guide takes you along the Atlantic Sea Board to Hout Bay, about a 25 minute drive.
In Imizamo Yetu, you meet your local host Phila Nogwavu. Long time resident Phila serves three courses across three venues.
In Hangberg you meet local host Brent Thomas. Across another three venues, Brent serves three courses.
Each course is a small tasting course, but you will still need to pace yourself!
The menu features vetkoek or amagwinya, a snack traditional to South Africans across colour and culture lines; freshly barbequed lamb; ‘running chicken’; snoek, a local fish, and various other sea food items (which seafood will depend on what the ocean is delivering at the time).
After the tour guests are dropped back at their accommodation, if they are staying centrally, or back at the starting point.
You will leave full (arrive hungry!) and deeply enriched by the stories, the places, the people and the insights gained on a food tour that opens up Hout Bay, Cape Town and South Africa in unexpected ways.

This tour was created by Phila Nogwavu (Imizamo Yetu) and Brent Thomas (Hangberg), with mentorship and diretion, from Coffeebeans Routes, and development support from Open Africa.

After the safari lodges, the Cape Winelands is the most popular destination on the African continent. There is good food and wine everywhere you look.

But there is very little if any chance to enjoy home-cooked traditional food, in the home of a local cook.

This Traditional Home-cooked Winelands Lunch experience makes that possible in the magnificent Dwars River Valley, lying between the towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Take a break from the gourmet fare, and get in touch with indigenous narratives and history and heritage, over a delicious meal prepared from scratch in an intimate home restaurant.

Meet and dine with Sienna Charles, your host. Sienna runs Beker en Bord (Cup and Plate in English), a quirky tea garden and home restaurant in Kylemore, one of the four towns in the Dwars River Valley. This community activist, grandmother, wife and entrepreneur is a terrific cook and storyteller.

Enjoy home-baked breads such as roosterbrood (bread baked over coals) or lepelbrood (spoon bread), locally produced jams, traditional meals such as tomato bredie (stew) and bobotie, and desserts such as koesusters (an aniseed doughnut ball), milktart, or malva pudding.

A Traditional Home-cooked Winelands Lunch experience can be easily add to your Wine Route itinerary as a lunch alternative to a normal restaurant.

Cape Malay cuisine is a unique distillation of traditional foods from Malaysia, Java, Indonesia and India, with influences from Mozambique and South Africa. It is a collision of dishes introduced by political prisoners at the Cape, the Dutch colonisers and the indigenous KhoeKhoe. Typically, Cape Malay curries don’t have the heat of Indian curries, preferring the sweetness that came from the inclusion of the fruits of the fertile Cape soil.

This Cape Malay Cooking Workshop takes place in Simondium, between Paarl and Franschhoek, at the home of mother and daughter duo Fatima Shaik and Nuruneesha Mukaddam.

They welcome you into their home with a selection of traditional snacks, and then guide you through the preparation of a range of dishes, including boeber, daaltjies, and a curry. They’ll teach you to mix up spices just right. They’ll tell you stories about the food culture they grew up in and learned from their grandmothers. And then when the dishes are all ready, you’ll sit down together and enjoy the feast!

Cape Point Vineyards Restaurant
Dear Guest, welcome to Cape Point Vineyards, a unique farm in Noordhoek

A third level has been introduced, as “Roca 360 on the Roof” and the view will validate this sacred ground on God’s Given land.

As a trained chef and self-confessed foodie, it was only natural that Amanda, owner of Saucisse, would forge a career around this passion. Her love for food took her all over the world and into various food-related jobs – but the life-long dream to own and run her own eatery persisted.
Inspired by the hands-on, family-run boulangeries and charcuteries of France and Italy, the Saucisse concept was born. Amanda and her dad, Derrick, set to work to find the perfect space and location for Saucisse. The idea was to marry the intimacy, authentic customer service and flexibility of these traditional eateries with a proudly South African quest to source, stock and promote our fantastic SA local produce.
Situated in the heart of trendy Woodstock’s The Old Biscuit Mill Saucisse opened its doors in 2010.
Amanda, Derrick and the beaming Saucisse staff have been pleasing taste-buds ever since!
