Wildlife on our game reserve
Started in 1999 the wildlife reintroduction has seen the return of elephant, white rhino, lion and buffalo to the area. Antelope such as the Cape Eland, kudu, black wildebeest, zebra, springbok and gemsbok are now at home on the grassy plains. Smaller resident mammals such as the shy Cape Fox, bushbuck, caracal, bat eared fox, duiker and the elusive Cape Mountain leopard are a rare treat to spot on safari.

Garden Route Game Lodge was the first reserve in the Western Cape to reintroduce cheetah in 2007 and through our co-operation with the Endangered Wildlife Trust we have played a role in increasing the meta population of this threatened species in South Africa.

flora fauna
Fynbos and Aloes
Fynbos is the natural shrubland or heathland (habitat) vegetation occurring in a small belt of the Western Cape of South Africa, mainly in winter rainfall coastal and mountainous areas with a Mediterranean climate.

The fynbos ecoregion is within the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome.

Fynbos is home to an amazing diversity of plant species including many members of the Protea Family, Heath family, and Reed family of restios. The nearby town Albertinia is the heart of the thatching reed business which makes use of the female restio plant.

Aloes such as the Cape Aloe or Aloe Ferox occur in abundance and are still sustainably harvested or “tapped” for their healing characteristics using the same method traditional method of the Bushman.

Money Matters

SOUTH AFRICA

The official currency of South Africa is the Rand (ZAR). The best way to manage your money in Africa is a mixture of cash and an ATM card (best to have both Visa and MasterCard).

Cash

Cash is easily changed at exchange bureaus and they generally offer the best rates. ***PLEASE NOTE: MANY BUSINESSES AND BANKS IN AFRICA DO NOT ACCEPT US DOLLAR NOTES OLDER THAN 2006. IF YOU ARE BRINGING USD, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND LARGE BILLS IN GOOD CONDITION, 2006 SERIES ONWARDS ONLY. ANY OLD OR DAMAGED NOTES MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED. ***

The South African Rand can also be used widely in countries of Southern Africa. When changing money, only use reputable authorized money exchange vendors and never anyone on the street. There are many instances of traveler’s being given counterfeit notes or being tricked when money is being counted out.

Visa & Master Card

With ATMs being increasingly available in the many major towns and cities and even some campsites, credit or debit cards are a convenient way to access money. Throughout Africa, cards with the Visa logo are most readily recognized, although MasterCard is also accepted in most places. A charge is made for each international transaction - please check with your bank how much this fee will be. Check with your bank before leaving home that your card can be used as a debit card in Africa. You may also want to notify your bank that you are visiting Africa as it's not unknown for banks to freeze cards which show sudden transactions in other countries. At “A Team Tours” we are serious about your safety and strongly advise that you follow the following rules when drawing cash at an ATM:

Take someone with you when you want to withdraw money from an ATM
Withdraw money inside a bank if possible
Do not withdraw large sums of money from an ATM – rather use your credit card
NEVER ACCEPT HELP FROM A STRANGER, not even
When it comes to money matters on the trip, every traveler is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities and laundry. It's always better to bring a little more than you think you'll need.

Also make sure you've read your trip details thoroughly so you know what's included in the trip price and what isn't. This should make budgeting a little easier. You'll find this info in the Inclusions section of your Essential Trip Information (that's this document).

Emergency Funds

Please also make sure you have access to an additional US$500, to be used when unforeseen incidents or circumstances outside our control (e.g. a natural disaster, civil unrest, strike action or an outbreak of bird flu) necessitate a change to our planned route.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarize yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

SOUTH AFRICA:

Australia: No visa required Belgium: No visa required Canada: No visa required Germany: No visa required Ireland: No visa required Netherlands: No visa required New Zealand: No visa required Switzerland: No visa required United Kingdom: No visa required USA: No visa required
Citizens of the above countries do not need visas to visit South Africa as a tourist for up to three months. Citizens of all countries should check with the relevant consulates as to whether a visa is required.

Entry Requirements - Passports

Please note that non-machine readable passports are no longer accepted by South African immigration. All visitors to South Africa must have a machine readable travel document (e-passport). Failure to present an e-passport will result in denied entry. Passengers with a valid visa issued in a non-machine readable passport will be handled on a case by case basis, but a fine will still be applicable.

Entry Requirements - Travelling with Children

A new immigration regulation came into effect on 1st October 2014, whereby parents will need to produce an original unabridged birth certificate if they are travelling with children. The new regulation has been put in place to protect children from being abducted, kidnapped and preventing child trafficking. The Department of Home Affairs has urged all parents to apply for unabridged certificates for their children. Additionally, further documentation including permission to travel, may be required if only one parent is travelling. These are requirements of the immigration regulation 6 (12)(a) for parents travelling with children. So just to be on the safe side, more information can be found here: http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/civic-services/traveling-with-children

We recommend traveler’s check requirements before travel as they can change.

What to Take

What you need to bring will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, the tour you have chosen and when you are travelling. Generally speaking, you should pack as lightly as possible.

Most traveler’s carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc. for day trips.

Water Bottle

Consider bringing your own water bottle to refill along the way. We recommend at least a 1.5litre capacity. The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments.

Health

All Capey Tours traveler’s need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. Please note that if, in the opinion of our group leader or local guide, any traveler is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Capey Tours reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial requirements before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements (including a spare pair of glasses) as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip. For legal reasons our leaders and guides are prohibited from administering any type of drugs including headache tablets and antibiotics. Please ensure that you are adequately prepared.

Yellow Fever

A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home.

It is your responsibility to check with your doctor well in advance of leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Travel Insurance

span style="font-size: 14pt;">Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.

When travelling on a trip, you won't be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader.

If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country.

A Couple Of Rules

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Capey Tours traveler’s. Capey Tours philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter and in particular, the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of sexual harassment at Capey Tours, either between passengers or involving our leaders or local operators. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately, please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.

Responsible Travel

We believe strongly in low impact or rather positive impact tourism. Broadly speaking this means that we try to minimize the negative aspects of tourism on the local cultures and environments that we visit and highlight the positive aspects.

Safety

At Capey Tours we take your safety very seriously. Like any other country in the world, South Africa also has “hotspots” where it’s not safe to go. In order to keep you safe at all times, we have listed a few pointers below that will go a long way in ensuring your safety in various situations:

ATM’s

Take someone with you when you want to withdraw money from an ATM
Withdraw money inside a bank if possible
Do not withdraw large sums of money from an ATM – rather use your credit card
NEVER ACCEPT HELP FROM A STRANGER, not even someone who looks like a security guard. If your card should get stuck or be “swallowed” by the machine, stay there and send you companion to look for help or phone the number on the machine
In the Car
Plan your route in advance
Keep your car doors locked at all times and windows closed
Lock valuable items in the boot
At night, park in well-lit areas
Never pick up strangers or hitch-hikers
If in any doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice
At the Hotel
Never leave your luggage unattended
Store valuables in the hotel’s safe-deposit box
Keep your room locked, whether you’re in it or not
If someone knocks, check who it is first before opening the door
Hand the keys in at reception whenever you leave the hotel

In the Street

Avoid ostentatious displays of expensive jewelry, cameras and other valuables
Don’t carry large sums of money around
At night, steer clear of dark, isolated areas
It’s better to explore in groups and stick to well-lit, busy streets
A policeman or traffic officer will be glad to direct you if you get lost
If you want to call a taxi, your hotel or the nearest tourist information office will recommend a reliable service
Feedback

After your travels, we want to hear from you! We rely on your feedback. We read it carefully. Feedback helps us understand what we are doing well and what we could be doing better. It allows us to make improvements for future traveler’s.

OVERVIEW
Looking to explore the Garden Route in one epic weekend? Then you’ve found your match! This three-day itinerary is filled to the brim with the best highlights the area has to offer. Wander along the Garden Route - a piece of paradise on the southeastern coast of South Africa. Search for members of Africa's Big 5, bungy jump, walk through dense forests and spot African wildlife on a safari, all in one action-packed itinerary.

The road trip begins as you drive along the longest wine route in the world, South Africa’s very own Route 62. Enjoy the rugged scenery and winding roads as you make your way to Oudtshoorn to explore the fascinating underground maze of the Cango Caves.

Adventure awaits over the next two days. Walk with three orphaned elephants as they venture to their water hole. Canoe along tranquil waters in Wilderness, keeping an eye out for the abundant birdlife. Face your fears as you hurtle off the world’s highest bridge bungy, or visit the lush forests of the Tsitsikamma area. Bundu-bash through the fynbos on a 4x4 safari with a game ranger as you set out to spot members of Africa’s Big Five, and connect with nature on a tranquil bush walk in a private game reserve. There's a lot to explore on this 3-day adventure, so let's get started!
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
Paddle through the staggering scenery and abundant birdlife of Wilderness.

Experience a rush like no other when you jump from one of the world’s highest bridge bungy spots!

Head deep underground to the illuminated wonder world of the Cango Caves.

Follow orphaned African elephants at Buffelsdrift on their trek to the waterhole.

Roadtrip along Route 62's semi-desert country plains with quirky pitstops along the way.

Spot some of Africa's Big Five on a 4x4 safari at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve.

Follow a field ranger as you track wildlife on a guided bush walking safari.
ITINERARY
This itinerary guideline can run in reverse or a different order.
Day 1
Oudtshoorn
±450km
Start with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Cape Town.
Set off along the famous Route 62, where you'll capture the beauty of high mountains, twisting passes, vast Karoo plains, vineyards and orchards. Pop in at one of the many farm stalls along the way, stocked with locally crafted delights before arriving in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world.
Delve deep underground into the magical Cango Caves’ limestone chambers, alive with drip formation stalactites and stalagmites and remnants of Khoikhoi paintings. Opt for the easy-going guided Heritage Tour to test the cave’s acoustics and gain insights about the dripstone evolution. By contrast, the Adventure Tour allows would-be contortionists to squeeze, twist and wiggle their way through limestone chimneys on a rather more daring underground route.
You’ll spend the evening in Oudtshoorn at leisure. Either head to town to enjoy a top restaurant meal or join locals for an optional outdoor braai (similar to barbeque) including South African favourites, such as ostrich kebabs, 'boerewors' sausage and 'potbrood' bread at the local backpackers.
Ways 2 Stay
Overnight accommodation included according to your selected stay package. Subject to availability.
