Department (Tours & Winelands)

Brand (Cape Town Trike Tours)

Province

Total time: Approximately 7-8 hours.
Please note that the entry fee to the Cape Point Nature Reserve is excluded.

A scenic ride to Cape Point via Camps Bay, Hout Bay, the world famous Chapman’s Peak Drive (if open), Kommetjie, and Misty Cliffs. The return trip from Cape Point will be via Simonstown, stopping at the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Fish Hoek, scenic Boyes Drive, along the M3 stopping at Rhodes Memorial. Tour excludes entry to Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Cape Point is a spectacular, narrow finger of land, covered in endemic fynbos and home to picturesque bays, beaches, rolling green hills and valleys. It falls within the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site, and is the most southerly point within the Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. The Cape Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world – it is home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora.

Apart from the spectacular view, you’ll be able to see the most powerful lighthouse on the South African coast, which helps guide ships safely through perilous waters that have seen to the end of many a vessel.

Look out, too, for pelagic birds of which there are a large variety, zebra, eland, and the many species of reptiles and small mammals. Chacma baboons are common here, especially at the point itself. Don’t be tempted to feed the baboons and rather stay well away, as they can be aggressive.

Cape Point is open daily and is a must-see.

Total time: Approximately 8 hours

A scenic ride to Hermanus via the N2 to the Strand, Gordens Bay, the breathtakingly beautiful Clarence Drive (more below) to Rooi Els, Kleinmond, and Hermanus. Return via the Houwhoek Pass to Grabouw, the majestic Sir Lowry’s Pass back along the N2.

The scenic R44 Clarence Drive departs from Gordons Bay to Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Betty`s Bay and Kleinmond along a steep coastal road carved from rocky sea cliffs. There are magnificent views across False Bay to Table Mountain and the rest of the Cape Peninsula.

Clarence Drive provides pleasant whale watching spots, all along the route where you can stop and watch the Southern Right Whales visit the sheltered shallow bays of the South African coastline each year. Clarence Drive leads through the Kogelberg Biosphere, the first and only Biosphere in South Africa to be proclaimed by United Nations` Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO): a testament to the stunning diversity and large number of its flowering plants, many of which are found nowhere else in the fynbos biome. The whole Hangklip-Kleinmond area (Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Betty`s Bay and Kleinmond) is to be managed according to international principles, which aim to combine conservation, sustainable use of natural resources and wise development.

Hermanus:
With its unparalleled scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, upmarket shops and endless adventure options, it’s little wonder that Hermanus has grown in size and popularity during the last decade. Visitors from near and far flock to the town to enjoy its many charms while local residents and homeowners savour the privilege of living in this unique region.

About Signal Hill
In 1660 Van Riebeeck established a look-out post at Kloof Nek and in 1668 a temporary look-out was also established on Signal Hill which was 100 metres higher. The first flag was hoisted and the guns fired on 27.03.1673 to announce the arrival of the Alkmaar. A month later the flagstaff was split in two by lightning as was to happen a number of times in the future

Signal Hill was also the start of a point-to-point signalling system. By gun or the hoisting of flags messages could be sent to Salt River, Tygerberg, Muldersvlei, Paarl etc. until the whole colony was alerted to any danger in a matter of hours.

For three and a half centuries Signal Hill has played a prominent part in the lives of Capetonians and a display of its past history could broaden the experience and add considerably to the interest of tourists and local visitors to the area.
