Lucy's Story

Over forty years ago, in the Ethiopian town of Hadar, scientists discovered Lucy, a fossil that forever changed our understanding of human evolution.

The discovery of Lucy provided the missing link in our evolutionary spectrum, and proof that we all, in some way, originate from Africa.

The archaeological team who made the discovery celebrated that night by drinking lots of wine, dancing and playing the famous Beatles song 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' all night long.

Her Amharic name 'Dinkinesh' means 'you are marvelous'.
Here at Lucy, we hope to create a magical night for you too, and to share the food, warmth and rich culture of majestic Ethiopia with you.

The Basics

Injera

A spongy bread, resembling a crepe or pancake, injera is an accompaniment to most Ethiopian dishes. It is traditionally made from Teff flour, and at Lucy we make our own injera using a combination of rice and teff flour.

Kibe

Clarified butter made by cooking the butter with garlic, ginger, cardamom, coriander and a blend of Ethiopian spices and then strained through cheesecloth to become purified.

Berbere

This traditional Ethiopian spice is made of a combination of peppers, garlic, onion and other spices which are dried and ground into powder form. A full-bodied spice with a bit of heat, which is very versatile and compliments both meat and vegetable dishes.

Mitmita

Made with hotter peppers than berbere, mitmita contains similar spices but has much more heat than it's milder cousin
Common Ethiopian Dishes

Kitfo

Prime beef tartare, seasoned with clarified butter and mitmita, served raw, lightly sauteed or fully cooked, accompanied by cottage cheese and sauteed spinach
Doro Wot

Mildly spiced chicken stew, doro wot is simmered for hours in a combination of Ethiopian spices and served with whole, hard-boiled eggs
Tibs

Tender beef or lamb cubes sauteed and cooked with pepper and onion
Shiro Wot

A popular vegetarian stew, Shiro Wot is made from chickpea flour and simmered with garlic and onions in a berbere sauce
